The 69th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association

Disclosure of Conflict of Interest at the Annual Meetings of the Japanese Cancer Association

In clinical cancer studies derived from industry-academic collaboration, not only benefits to society from the outcomes of research (public interest) but also money, status, rights, and other benefits (private interest) may be entailed. If these two types of benefits occur within an individual researcher, it is called conflict of interest. To ensure fairness of presentations of clinical studies derived from industry-academic collaboration, the Japanese Cancer Association (JCA) asks speakers at the annual meetings of the JCA, beginning in 2009, to disclose their status of Conflict of Interest (COI) according to the Clinical Oncology Research Conflict of Interest Policy, published in April 2008 by the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (version 1; see http://jsco.umin.ac.jp/english/coi2.html).

When you submit your abstract, please declare whether there are conflicts of interest among affiliated business involved in the research and a representative speaker (excluding coauthors) within the past 12 months, if your presentation is related to clinical studies*.

Please access the "Disclosure of Conflict of Interest" page, and check whether there is COI. If there is COI, you should submit the Disclosure of Conflict of Interest form of the JCA (Form 1) within 30 days after the submission of your abstract, and disclose your status of COI at your presentation at the annual meeting (both oral and poster presentations).

*Here, clinical studies mean medical-oriented research targeted to humans and conducted for the purpose of development and improvement in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases; elucidation of pathogenesis of diseases; and improvement in the quality of life of patients. Clinical studies targeted to humans include those using human materials (including DNA, cells, tissues, and sera) and data (including clinical information) derived from humans, which permit the identification of individuals. Studies using publicly or commercially available materials are not considered "clinical studies."

Deadline for submission: 31 May, 2010 (Japan time)
